Did You Know? Flag Day 2022

In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation declaring June 14 Flag Day. Congress followed the proclamation in 1949 by enacting a statue that officially recognized Flag Day.

There are still five American flags on the moon, but they are all probably bleached white due to radiation from the sun.

When two or more flags are flown on the same pole, the American flag must be at the top.

The colors of the flag have important meanings: red symbolizes hardiness and valor, white symbolizes purity and innocence, and blue represents vigilance, perseverance, and justice.

And, Did you Know about these items?

Per CNBC, about 66% of the average retired Americans' wealth is home equity.

There is some good news, actually.

  • The Labor Department reported early June that employers added 390,000 jobs, the 17th straight monthly gain.
  • The unemployment rate was 3.6% for the third straight month, near a half-century low.
  • While inflation is high and bad, employment has been one major beneficiary.
  • 2022 has also seen a record amount of US state's tax collections from 2021's record growing economy.

If home price growth estimates are accurate, we should see a sharp decline in home inflation soon. While home prices are still rising at double digits in many areas this year, many are predicting this will fall to low single digits in 2023 as interest rates continue their rise.

Hopefully lumber pricing is an indicator of what might happen with other prices. Lumber is now approaching $500, significantly less than what it was priced at just 3 months ago ($1,302).

Members of Generation Z - those born between 1997 and 2012 - accounted for 10% of homebuyers across America’s 50 largest metro areas in 2021. Many are looking outside expensive metro areas to find more affordable homes in midsize cities.

In 1949, 78.8% of all households contained married couples. In 2021, 72 years later, 47.3% of households had married couples. Both men and women are marrying later in life. The median ages of first marriage were at their youngest in 1956 (just over 22 for men and 20 for women). In 2019, those figures were at their oldest: over 30 for men and over 28 for women. About 35% of men and 30% of women have never been married as of 2019.  Over 11% of US households are single people.

Many consumers are adjusting their spending habits to adjust for rising prices. The biggest areas where people are cutting are dining out, grocery shopping, driving less, fewer/shorter vacations, and cutting subscriptions.

A new landscaping theme has emerged known as Rewilding. This is characterized by a return to a more natural, wilder style of landscaping that is composed mostly of native plants that attract birds, bees and other wildlife. It aims to re-create a perfectly balanced ecosystem in the garden.
