If you’ve never had the joy of picking fresh fruit – even if there are reluctant fruit fans in your family – everyone will love this unique, delicious experience.
Several farms that are welcoming visitors right now for the “u-pick” experience are an easy drive away. SoCal berry season began in the spring and lasts through most of the summer. Depending on supply and weather conditions, it’s best to visit sooner than later, and to check with each farm in advance to confirm that their picking fields are open.
Underwood Family Farms, Moorpark
Since mid-April, Underwood’s sprawling strawberry fields have been open and this summer, blackberries are ready to pick by mid-June. Raspberries are ready in July and run until November. It is very hot in the fields, so visit early morning or late afternoon; bring hats and sunblock. Visit them on Instagram for current updates.
Sweet strawberry picking and lots of other fun is here, including Storytime on weekdays and weekend educational exhibits and workshops for children.
South Coast Farms, San Juan Capistrano
Berry harvesting is open Thursday-Sunday, from 10am-4pm; no reservations are required. Visit them on Instagram for current details on supply and picking.
Carlsbad Strawberry Company, Carlsbad
Carlsbad Strawberry Company is a four-generation family farm and is said to be one of the best farms for berry picking. There is also a Sunflower Maze, tastes of homemade honey, games and activities for children.
Over three acres of foothill organic strawberry patches welcome you here, with picking through September while berries last. There are organic raspberries to pick from late July through September. (Apple picking season begins in November!)
Kenny’s Strawberry Farm, Fallbrook
Strawberries are usually available for picking through July. Farm is open Friday-Sunday; advance reservations are required. Visit website and Instagram for updated information.
